The Ocean's Future is in Our Hands

Discarded fishing gear, the use of increasingly powerful equipment creating less selective methods and the sheer intensity of fishing today are taking a severe toll on marine creatures and habitats. Studies show that abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) alone is estimated to make up nearly 2 % of global fishing gear—representing thousands of square kilometres of nets and tens of millions of pots and traps lost annually.

In the 21st century, fishing has evolved from small-scale, relatively low-impact operations into a high-technology, high-volume industry. That shift has increased pressures on ecosystems, including by-catch of non-target species, damage to seabed habitats from bottom-towed gear and plastic pollution from synthetic gear left in the sea.

CWHP welcomes fishing companies and crews who fish sustainably, adopt best practice waste-management measures and take responsibility for the gear they use and the waste they generate. Your involvement can make you part of the solution rather than the problem, helping preserve marine life, habitats and the long-term viability of fishing itself. We invite you to join the global movement, benefit from enhanced environmental recognition, show leadership in the sector and help set a new standard for waste-aware fishing operations.
